This is an 8000 word play based on the life and times of Harriet Tubman, one of the greatest heroines of the United States ever. There are some scenes from her youth as a slave and some from her years as Moses leading her people to freedom. There is a section in the play where abolitionists she knew speak about how the goal of eliminating slavery can be attained. Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Wendell Phillips, and John Brown each give a short talk based on their writings and beliefs. The rest of the play is mostly about Harriet Tubman. She did an amazing amount of courageous feats and this play really could only briefly touch on her exploits. The play tries to give the reader an impression of who she was and what she believed and did. A full presentation of her life would take huge volumes. She was probably the bravest, most active American woman in that century. Those were difficult years for everyone and survival required courage and some suffering, but especially for Harriet Tubman. To an extent she was a visionary. Total dedication to freeing slaves. She could put herself above any other worldly cares and become totally engrossed in her missions of mercy with her endurance and determination. Many people have had moments of valor. She had years and actually never quit, uncovering injustice even in her old age. From reader reviews:
